NOTE: This alias is now inactive. There is a new hiking club/group hosted at Googlegroups that we will be organizing hikes on. Check out sfbayhiking.org for more information.

The Sun Hiking alias consists of a group of people who are interested in hiking and backpacking activities in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a casual group where anyone can suggest and organize hikes that they feel are worth doing. Even though the alias is hosted in Sun Microsystems, it has nothing to do with the company and the views and opinions expressed here are solely mine. The alias initially consisted only of Sun employees but has now grown to include other people from the Bay Area.

The alias was originally started in March 1998 and now has about 150 people on it. Due to the large number of people on the alias, most hikes are limited to around 10 people on a first come first served basis though sometimes the number swells to around 12. This alias is also a forum for meeting people with similar outdoor interests and setting up backpacking trips.

At this point, we don't hold any regular meetings or any other such activities but hikes are organized whenever people have the time and energy to do those. We did have a party when the number of people on the alias reached 100 back in August 1999 and who knows, we will have another when we reach 200. If you want to join this group or know someone who does, send me an email.

If you are looking for a more organized and well planned hiking club, a good club that I recommend is the Stanford Outing Club. Many members of this alias also belong to the Stanford club.
